Volkswagen Doubled Electric Vehicle Delivery in 2021
Despite setbacks related to COVID-19 in the previous year, Volkswagen managed to have a record-breaking year in 2021. The German motor vehicle manufacturer doubled its deliveries of electric vehicles last year. The proportion of purely battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid vehicles jumped to 7.5 percent of total deliveries, compared to 4 percent in 2020. Significant increases were recorded in the United States, China, and Germany.
Ralf Brandstätter, CEO of the Volkswagen brand noted, “Volkswagen is continuing to press ahead with the transition to e-mobility despite the limited supply of semiconductors… In a very short time, we have reached a top position for all-electric vehicles in Europe.” In 2021, Volkswagen delivered more electric vehicles worldwide than ever before; more than 369,000 electric cars, including approximately 106,000 PHEVs, and 263,000 all-electric vehicles to customers.
Take a Look at the Numbers Around the World
United States – Close to 17,000 battery-powered electric vehicles (BEVs) were sold in the United States, which was almost twenty times more than in the previous year. This brought Volkswagen up to fourth place among BEV manufacturers.
China – A total of 77,100 BEVs were delivered in China, including more than 70,000 from the ID. family. This has made Volkswagen one of the five biggest BEV providers in China, with growth expected to continue for 2022.
Europe – BEVs now account for 19.3 percent of Volkswagen’s deliveries in Europe, compared to 12.6 percent in 2020. There was a record-breaking order backlog of 543,000 vehicles in Europe alone. In Germany specifically, 1 in 4 vehicles delivered by Volkswagen was a BEV/PHEV.
ID.4 – Volkswagen’s Most Popular BEV Model
Volkswagen’s most popular BEV model worldwide is the ID.4, and it saw huge success throughout its first year on the market. Klaus Zellmer, Board Member for Sales and Marketing at Volkswagen, explained that the backlog of 95,000 IDs showed the continued high demand for Volkswagen vehicles.
For 2022, the ID.4 saw even more upgrades sure to please eager car buyers. This electric compact crossover SUV combines the heart of an EV with the size and function of an SUV.
